Introducing allergens, one at a time

Common allergens are best introduced early and kept in the diet. One new allergen at a time, in the first half of the day, and wait a couple of days before the next.

Your baby has a family history of allergy or eczema: talk to your pediatrician before offering peanut and egg.

Suggested order

1. Egg

Well-cooked egg: omelet strips or mashed hard-cooked egg.

Foods with this allergen: Egg

2. Peanut

Thin peanut butter stirred into porridge or yogurt.

Foods with this allergen: Peanut

3. Milk

Plain whole-milk yogurt or cheese, or milk cooked into food.

Foods with this allergen: Plain yogurt, Cheese, Ricotta & cottage cheese, Butter, Cow’s milk

4. Sesame

A little tahini stirred into food or hummus.

Foods with this allergen: Hummus, Sesame & tahini

5. Wheat

Toast fingers, soft pasta or a little wheat cereal.

Foods with this allergen: Pasta, Bread, Couscous

6. Tree nuts

Thin almond or cashew butter, or finely ground nuts in porridge.

Foods with this allergen: Almond, Walnut, Cashew, Hazelnut

7. Soy

Soft tofu sticks, or plain soy yogurt.

Foods with this allergen: Tofu

8. Fish

Flaked, well-cooked white fish or salmon (check bones).

Foods with this allergen: Salmon, White fish (cod, haddock), Tuna, Sardines

9. Shellfish

Well-cooked shrimp, finely chopped.

Foods with this allergen: Shrimp (prawns)
